Key points

HEVC = H.265 = MPEG-H Part 2. It lives inside MP4, MKV, MOV or TS, and in HEIC photos.
Free on Mac, phones, TVs and Linux; on Windows, $0.99 or a player like VLC.
Without a GPU decoder, 4K HEVC stutters.

The basics

What's the difference between HEVC, H.265 and x265?: HEVC and H.265 are the standard. x265 is a free program that encodes HEVC, as x264 does H.264. More on what HEVC is.
MP4 or MKV for HEVC?: MP4 is more compatible (Apple, browsers, phones); MKV supports more audio and subtitle tracks. The video is identical and you can switch without re-encoding.
What are hvc1 and hev1?: Two ways of storing HEVC parameters inside MP4. Apple only accepts hvc1; change it with FFmpeg: -c copy -tag:v hvc1. See the Mac guide.
What is 10-bit HEVC?: The Main 10 profile, with 1,024 levels per colour instead of 256. Required for HDR and reduces banding; needs a somewhat newer GPU.

Common problems

Windows says I need a codec: Install HEVC Video Extensions or use VLC. Windows guide.
The video plays but stutters: It's decoding in software. Check your GPU in browsers and GPUs or convert it to H.264.
iPhone photos won't open on my PC: They're HEIC: you need the HEIF and HEVC extensions, or set the iPhone to transfer as JPEG.
HDR video colours look dull: The player isn't tone mapping. Try mpv or VLC, or turn on HDR in Windows.

Devices and services

Will my TV get Spain's 4K terrestrial channels?: Only with DVB-T2 and HEVC. All about Spain's UHD TV.
Does YouTube use HEVC?: Not for playback: YouTube serves VP9 and AV1 (and H.264 to old devices). It does accept HEVC uploads.
Do Discord, Telegram or WhatsApp support HEVC?: They accept the file, but previews depend on the recipient's device; WhatsApp usually re-encodes. For trouble-free sharing, H.264 is still safest.

Frequently asked questions

What does HEVC stand for?

High Efficiency Video Coding. It is also called H.265 and MPEG-H Part 2.

HEVC or H.264 for YouTube uploads?

YouTube accepts both and re-encodes everything. Upload in the original's format to avoid losing quality in an intermediate conversion.

Why does my HEVC video look green or blocky?

Usually a hardware acceleration bug with an old driver, or a 10-bit file on a GPU that only supports 8-bit. Update drivers or turn off acceleration in the player.

Does WhatsApp support HEVC videos?

WhatsApp re-encodes videos when sending them; iPhone HEVC clips send fine. If you send the video as a document it arrives untouched and the recipient must be able to play HEVC.

Does Plex transcode HEVC?

Yes. If the client cannot play HEVC, Plex transcodes to H.264, which needs a lot of CPU or a GPU with hardware acceleration (Plex Pass).
